Simple tips to potty train your little one before preschool

You have recently celebrated your child’s third birthday and as a proud parent, you
are more than happy about the various landmarks she has achieved. You have seen
her tantrums and quirky behaviour, and there is not one dull moment while she is
around. This is also the time when she is more than ready for some serious potty
training.
Potty training cannot be pushed any further as she is ready to get enrolled at one of
the leading preschools in India and will have to put on her best behaviour there.
Here’s what you can do to convince her to hop on to the toilet seat and stay there till
she finishes her business there:
Use reverse psychology: Your little toddler is absolutely unwilling to let go of
her diapers and is unmoved by all kinds of bribes being offered to her, right
from her favourite doll to the tastiest of candies. Try using reverse psychology
and tell her that she should not use the potty at all. This will make her rebel
and there are chances of her dumping the diaper and use the potty.
Realign her schedule: Your tiny tot was all geared up to follow the potty
routine when she suddenly refuses to use the potty. Check if her schedule
has been disrupted for any reason. Stick to the method that gave you success
and it is bound to bring her back on track.
Keep the diaper around: Your little one is ok peeing in the bathroom but
refuses to poop in it, preferring the diaper to do that. Remember the diaper is
her friend and it will not be easy for her to let go. If she poops in the diaper,
ask her to use the bathroom while doing so. Let her sit on the pot wearing the
diaper and slowly she will get used to it and used the bathroom like all of us.
Your baby “holds” it forever: Kids can be quite stubborn and can “hold” on for
an entire day and refuse to poop or pee. It could be a case of constipation or
maybe she is afraid of the act because she felt pain while doing it. Add a lot of
fibre to her food and speak to her paediatrician for immediate relief.
Despite these efforts, if your child refuses to climb atop the potty, here’s what you can
try:
Your little one will have a few accidents during potty training, even while she gets
enrolled at the best playgroup school in India. Do not blame her for it and don’t
ever punish her. Don’t make the potty training a power struggle as this will not yield
positive results. Give your child the freedom to choose when to use the bathroom
and watch the transformation.
